Migrating from Square

Square is the cleanest migration of the major platforms. Square gift card numbers drop straight into Shopify's format, and Square gives you a self-serve export with the exact balance column you need.

Before you export: deactivate first

Gift cards can be spent by anyone holding the code, so a card that is live on both Square and Shopify can be redeemed twice. Freeze or deactivate your gift cards in Square before you export, then export at the moment of cutover. See the migration hub for the full reasoning.

Square treats gift card migration as all-or-none: once you move to Shopify, Square cards can no longer be reloaded, so plan a single clean cutover rather than a gradual switch.

Export your gift cards from Square

1. Open your Square Dashboard.
2. Go to Reports > Gift Cards.
3. Click Export in the upper right.
4. Choose Detail CSV.

This downloads a CSV with one row per gift card, including each card's number and balance.

Which balance column to import

Import the Current outstanding Amount column. This is the current remaining balance on each card, the amount the customer has left to spend.

Do not import the original or loaded amount. If a card started at $50 and has $12 left, the value you bring into Shopify is $12. Importing the original amount hands customers money they have already spent.

Your codes carry over unchanged

Square standard gift card numbers (GANs) are 16 numeric digits. That fits Shopify's 8 to 20 letter-and-number rule exactly, so your Square codes carry over as-is. The card a customer is holding keeps working with no new code to communicate.

If any code in your file falls outside 8 to 20 letters and numbers, use the fresh-code workflow to reissue those cards and notify those customers.

Import into BatchCard

1. In BatchCard, map the Square number column to Code and the Current outstanding Amount column to Value.
2. Review the column mapping and validation results.
3. Create the batch.
